B Camminga (they/them/she) is a Lecturer in the Sociology of Gender at the University of Bristol and a Research Associate at the African Centre for Migration & Society, University of the Witwatersrand. Their research focuses on gender identity and expression on the African continent, with particular attention to the experiences of transgender migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
Their first monograph, Transgender Refugees and the Imagined South Africa, was awarded the 2019 Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Studies (with Aren Aizura) and received an honourable mention for the Ruth Benedict Prize in Queer Anthropology. B is the co-convenor of the African LGBTQI+ Migration Research Network (ALMN) and co-editor of Queer and Trans African Mobilities: Migration, Diaspora, and Asylum (2022) and East African Queer and Trans Displacement (forthcoming, 2026).
They have also consulted for organisations including HIAS, UNHCR, and Wellspring on issues relating to transgender refugees and asylum. Their current work examines emergent South–South migration patterns, exploring the strategies queer and trans people use to move, survive, and build community across regions.
