This workshop will highlight academic and anecdotal evidence to draw a strong link between Shame and Trauma and the use of violence, including family violence. It will also present effective practice tools, based on that evidence, that facilitate practitioners' abilities to work with Shame as a catalyst for self-evolution and non-violent relating. The content has been adapted to service users who identify with diverse cultural backgrounds, and who are in a post-settlement phase in Australia.
There is an acknowledgement of the various ways in which Shame manifests and the way in which it is understood in various cultural contexts. The workshop will draw upon the links made between shame and trauma, particularly focusing on the Polyvagal system. The workshop will unpack the impact of shame on self-identity and social belonging.
Participants will walk away with an increased understanding of Shame - definitions, manifestation and impact; as well as ideas for practice to better work with Shame. There will be an interactive demonstration of the content and a deeper consideration for useful practice tools.
